How To Set Up Your Google Analytics Account In 5 Minutes

Google provides one of the best web analytics packages out there, and it's 100% free. Here is a quick guide to setting up your account so you can gather data.

1. Create a Google Analytics Account

Go to and click "Sign up now."

If you already have a Google account (for Gmail or a similar service,) you can click "Sign in" and you'll get an Analytics account automatically.

If you already use Google AdWords, you can access Analytics via the same account. It's listed under the "Tools & Analysis" tab.

2. Add Your Website

Once signed-in, click the "Admin" tab in the top right corner of the page.

Click the "+ New Account" button.

Fill out the form with your website name and URL. When ready, click the "Get Tracking ID" button.

You'll be presented with a tracking code snippet that must be placed into the source code of your website.

3. Paste The Code Into Your Site

Now it's time to install the tracking code. If you edit your site manually, you can paste the code into the HTML before the closing head tag (near the top of the page.)

If you use Wordpress, your theme may have a form field in the admin panel where you can paste the tracking code (or even just your ID from within the code.)

Either way, make sure the code will be included on every page of your website, and be sure to upload the updated files or save your changes in Wordpress.

4. Confirm The Install

Go back into your Analytics account and view your site profile. It should say "Tracking Installed" or "Waiting For Data." (If it says "Tracking Not Installed" or "Not Verified," make sure you completed step 3 correctly.)

At this point, you can sit back and wait for the data and reports (or create more profiles, set up filters, and more.
